DEPARTMENTS Editorial 4 FeedBack 6 Index of Advertisers 40 Of course I always believe that every issue of Amazing Computing is important, but as I finish this issue I am impressed with the depth of the articles. This doesn't mean that articles we published in other issues are any less important, it is just that these articles cover such a wide range of the Amiga's capabilities and interests.
Shamms Does It Again trial Co The Egyptian Connection by Shamms Mortier is another example of the depth this author has been able to bring to Amazing Computing. Using something as unusual as Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Shamms shows us how we can utilize these symbols to create our own works of art.
In Kara Forever, Shamms explores the potential of the new CD-ROM from Kara Fonts. Kara Fonts issued this CD-ROM with virtually everything in their library on it. Shamms' excitement with this volume of tools for both video and desktop publishing electrifies the article.
Audio Thunder by AsimWare Innovations is a translation tool created specifically for sound files. Using this application, the Amiga can now process and transfer sound files to other platforms.
This utility allows Amiga users the same freedom with audio that they have enjoyed with graphics for some time. 1 want to thank Shamms for discovering this product and reviewing it so quickly.
Memory Memory When we first heard of ProvTech's memory expansion for the Amiga 3000, we thought it was a good idea. Installing the AmiFAST 3000 proved not only to be relatively easy, but gave us the opportunity to utilize inexpensive expansion from the PC world in our A3000. This is a procedure I think every A3000 owner should consider.
Dave Farquhar is a brand new Amazing author. His first article on stretching your memory to the max is refreshing. It is nice to see that even our older Arnigas still have the ability to perform tasks and bring pleasure with limited memory capabilities in a world where other platforms are being measured in multiple megabytes.
Our Regulars Not to be outdone, Rob Hays and Dave Matthews have contributed their own expertise in their respective areas. Rob searched the rapidly expanding world of internet tools for the Amiga, while Dave demonstrated the utilities available to augment and personalize your Amiga's WorkBench.

While we are all excited by the opportunity that QuikPak is offering the Amiga community, most Amiga users are so shell shocked by now that they are having difficulty believing this sale will ever occur.
I can tell you that the individuals I have spoken with at QuikPak are not only 100% involved in getting this sale completed, they believe they can do great things in the Amiga market. The only problem, and this bears no ill reflection on QuikPak, is that we have all heard this before.
I hope QuikPak can get the sale completed. As I said last issue, the trustees are against the wall, they must sell the Amiga to someone soon. As Amiga owners, we want that someone to be focused on the Amiga.
I know that whenever someone actually secures the Amiga, they will get a swarm of messages and phone calls with suggestions. You can be assured that I will be among those calling. The Amiga is an important market, not only for the people who are in it or for the opportunities that have been lost under the control of other companies, but for the reasons seen above and in this issue. The Amiga has always offered diversity and potential the computer industry needs these alternative abilities now more than ever.

(ACM9703) “We can support ourselves and new Amiga users...”
ULTRA HIGH RESOLUTION 4x5 COLOR TRANSPARENCIES 35mm COLOR
SLIDES from ALL Amiga Computer & Video Toaster Graphics Dear
AC, We've been hearing a lot how the Amiga is going down the
toilet. I guess it all depends upon which propaganda you
believe. It's times like this that make me miss "the Bandito"
column in your old issues. I'm not prepared to listen to the
rantings of X-Amiga users turned Wintel drones or the hype
from company PR men trying to buy the rights to the Amiga
technology.
Amiga users want to look toward a corporate savior that will take the Amiga and really do something with it. Unfortunately, it has always been the users that have done something with their Amigas.
All we can hope from a corporate buyer of the rights to the Amiga is that they will continue to manufacture and R&D future Amigas. We, as users should be able to take care of the rest.
What we can do is so simple, we have done this many times before. We can support ourselves and new Amiga users by continuing to support our local users groups as well as local Amiga dealers. We can support future development by not pirating software, mailing out our shareware checks and to buy new Amiga products.
We can help promote the Amiga by simply writing letters to computer magazines or the producers of computer shows on TV, respectfully requesting more coverage of the Amiga platform and then, thanking them with a letter when you see such coverage. That way the Amiga name gets seen twice. Another way of getting better Amiga coverage is to write reviews and articles ourselves. We all have a favorite Amiga program that we use most of the time when we're on our Amigas.
Why not share our experiences with others?
We can also encourage Amiga companies to advertise in magazines like "Amazing."
Finally we can simply try to get the most from our computer, whether that's creating the best graphic or animation, learn more about video work with your local cable access company, or simply getting onto the Internet. We need each other to help the Amiga grow. Let's not just sit on our hands hoping that somebody else will make the Amiga become prosperous.
J ust my two cents, Rick Rudge Two cents that makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Rick.
Dear AC, Pleased to receive and review the January '97 AC in which is highlighted the Phase 5 concept next-generation Amiga. It doesn't seem that anyone can do anything with the Amiga in any fashion until VIScorp has settled their accounts with Escom (Unfortunately, I was under the impression that VIScorp had already found favor in the German courts, and passed through Escom's receiver's gauntlet. Shows you how wrong I can be). Since there is little, if anything that can be done until VIScorp is granted sole guardianship of the Amiga, then Phase 5 is just exercising. I mean, it sounds way too
good to be true; and we all remember what we've learned about anything that sounds too good. . .it probably is. Make no mistake, if they come through with most features intact as described in your article, then I'm hocking everything to get one. They certainly sound like they are on the right track. The Amiga has placed itself squarely in the center of the Video Non-Linear Editing fray where on one side is V-Lab Motion (JPEG), then the proprietary NewTek (VTASC) and the PAR Card. Only lacking a stand-out MPEG-based card to counter the Wintel and Mac representatives. The A box, if they're
serious, ought to do all the Amiga is currently doing, as well as all of what those other machines are currently doing or are ever going to do. A further question is: "How is this machine going to be placed against the latest and planned for SGI boxes?" I recognize the good people from Phase 5 will have to provide the pertinent details, themselves; but I do wonder how the Amiga is going to be represented in the marketplace, here at what appears to be the end of its pioneer days. Mr. Phase 5 indicates that the PowerPC 603e and 604e chips will be their processing engines; this is comparable with
Mac's first and pseudo- second generation PowerMacs. Only, they're now tooling up for the 704e chip reportedly capable of over 500 Mhz of cranking power. I'm of the belief that you gotta walk the walk if you're gonna talk the talk, meaning that: as good as the move to the PowerPC 603e & 604e will be (over the current '040 and '060 chips), you risk-nay, you ARE starting behind and at a deficit.
Aren't we at a deficit already? Perhaps we could influence Phase 5, through your (AC) good offices, to consider original tooling to include the 704e chip as the high-end machine; drop the 603e, and use the 604e as the entry-level chip-if indeed they plan to

Produce a machine as outlined. Use the 603e on an accelerator board for backward compatibility to the A3000, A4000, and A1200. Come to think of it, SoftLaw indicated earlier this year that they were working on a PowerPC accelerator for Z3 bus machines. What happened?
Thanks for listening. It was cathartic to vent my feelings this way. Please let me know how you feel, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, Randy K. Stanard Unfortunately, your letter was mailed before VIScorp dropped out. Now QuikPak is doing their best (see the letter on page 48) to secure the Amiga's future development.

QuikPak Accelerators QuikPak has released two new accelerators based on the 060 microprocessor from Motorola. One device is specifically for the Amiga 4000 Tower and the other has been designed for the A3000 and A4000 desktop computer.
The A4060T accelerator brings the power of an 060 to your A4000 tower computer. The 50MHz 060 processor outputs a high performance of 82MIPS, increasing the speed of your A4000 tower at least 4x. Now A4000 Tower users can add more memory to their system via the 4 72 PIN Simm sockets (EDO ram capable) on the accelerator for a maximum of 128MB. The A4060T promises to cut rendering times down to seconds and increase overall system performance. The A4060T accelerator is $ 999.00 U.S. There is also an optional SCSI-II WIDE controller.
QuikPak has a special offer. Amiga 4000 Tower owners can trade in their old A3640 25MHz to receive an A4060T accelerator for $ 749.00 U.S. To qualify for trade-up, the Amiga user must return a functional Tower '040 CPU card along with proof of purchase.

10 Amazing Computing UO O When it comes to all-in-one professional video editing, it's the hands-down winner.
The Emmy winning Video Toaster1'1 from NewTek is the desktop video production system that puts everything you need for professional, broadcast quality video right within reach.
It delivers "must-have" features like 4-input video switching, character generation in 100 Postscript"' fonts and over 300 effects, not to mention 2D and 3D graphics tools. But it's also packed with extras. Like the ability to insert video clips into LightWave 3D animations. CD quality audio. The ability to overlay animated video transitions across the screen in real-time. Easy drag and drop control. And the most reasonable price tag in the business on a system comparable to those costing $ 50,000 or more.
But to really make the Video Toaster hum, we created the Flyer...the tapeless, nonlinear editing powerhouse that revolutionized video editing. There are no bulky, multi-machine systems. No plodding off-line studio. No botched up editing. Nothing but you, the Flyer and the fastest means of getting from rough to finish without losing a bit of quality.
Which is why, from prime time broadcast to local news programming, corporate films to event videogiaphy, Video Toaster Flyer is in the picture.

Th© M9f Egyptian Connection I Hieroglyphic Font is perfect lor our 3D explorations. This Is a sample cl the character as viewed in Final Witter.
" ic. ' t y Egypt, ts there another country that evokes such mystery and wonder? A history lost in the sands of time. Giant pyramids, the sphinx, Pharonictreasure, mummies, everything about Egypt evokes stories told around campfires, One of the most interesting classes I ever taught was devoted to Egyptian myths, past and contemporary.
In my opinion, Egypt is the perfect subject for a computer artist and animator, since Hieroglyphic language is so filled with the same visual symbols that adorn Her temples and Mhabs. Egyptian language was originally a pure visual language, and there is som% question about the Hieroglyphs as much more than letters in the way we understand them. Like the ese ideograms, it is suspected that each of these 1 characters represented whole volumes of philosophical and religious thought. In our century, in accordance with the work of psychologists like C.G. Jung, it is possible that the very shape of
the Egyptian Hieroglyphic characters still evoke specific concepts when perceived in reality or dream.
Deniait Systems Do you wish you could use Egyptian Hieroglyphs in your DTP work on the Amiga, just like you use any other font? How about using the same images as the basis for 3D objects in your animation program? Well, you can, providing you get the disk of Egyptian Hieroglyphics from Deniart Systems. The disk comes for both Macintosh and Windows users, and contains several complete hieroglyphic libraries in both the iptType 1 formats. The PC disks when needed, so loai

* |L ij j* tflf 3D Continued If you have been following these
articles in the last few issues of Amazing, you will recall
that we complete a tutorial that demonstrated how to use simple
Table graphics from your word processor, and then transform the
Tables into 3D "buildings". If you learned to accomplish that
feat with a simple Table, then you will be able to do this
project as well.
Actually, any font object that appears on your word processor's screen can be used as the basis for a 3D object once you learn the method presented here.
The Method We can break the method used to accomplish the necessary 2D to 3D conversions and transformations into a few simple steps. Remember that you can use any symbol in any font as an element in this design method:
1. Select the type face that has the proper characters that you
want to translate.
2. In your word processor, type those characters to the screen.
Use a size that allows them to fill a viewable page on the
screen, and leave a little space between them so you can cut
them out later.
3. Use a Grab facility (I use ImageFX's excellent Grab Screen
tool) to grab the screen with the character from your selected
type face in full view.
J
4. Open an Amiga paint program of your choice (I use Brilliance)
and import the grabbed screen.
Now this is very important: Make the background of the picture black, and the other elements whatever color you desire. Save the graphic. Tire next step tells you why this is necessary.
5. For this step you will need Axiom's PixelPro.
Open it, and import the selected graphic you saved out from the paint step. When imported into PixelPro, pure "black" is read as the background color. The graphic will come in without its background, as a 3D cutout. When the smoothing menu pops up, select "yes" and use the defaults. This will even out the pixelated edges of Figure 3. After grabbing the enlarged figures and saving the file, Import them Into a paint program. Re-colorize the graphics so the backgrounds are black. Color the other elements any way you like. Cut the separate images out, and save them.
Figure 4. Import the saved files Into PixelPro separately. Add extruded depth, and save them out in the object format your 3D software expects.
The “BigScene” (right) Once vou have all ol vour picture elements in a tile, it's time to pul everything together in a composition. The Following software was used to create this scene: Deniart Egyptian Hieroglyph fonts, ImageFX, Brilliance, Pixel Pro, and LightWave. On the non-Amiga end, Adobe Photoshop, Natural Graphics Scene Designer, and Fractal Design Painter were used to touch things up. The bottom half of the composition shows an undersea photograph from the "Underwater Realms" from Aztech New Media.
The graphic a bit. Go to the "View" menu, choose "Select", and make sure the name of the graphic is selected in the drop-down listing. Now' go to the "Modify" menu, and select "Extrude". I use a setting of 60 here, but you can explore other settings. We are adding extruded depth to the Image just imported.
6. PixeiPro saves out 3D objects in a number of formats, with the
two most useful being LightWave (objects or scenes) and
VideoScape (Binary or ASCII). I am using LightWave as a part
of this project, but you might want to save out the 3D object
in another format that your 3D software uses. VideoScape ASCII
is a good all- around bet.
7. Import the newly saved 3D object into your 3D program. In
LightWave, each colorized aspect of the object can be targeted
for a newftcolor or surface, giving you loads of options on
configuring scenes. Do this to as many object as you like, and
mix and match these extruded objects with others if desired.
After you have designed the elements that make up your scene, place them in their locations and generate either or pictures or animations.
Follow-Up There will be one more article in this three part series, demonstrating how to use this same method with more standard font characters for either logos or more ambitious 3D scenes. Be sure to write me or send some e-mail if you have found some ways to use or alter this method in your own productions (rshamms@together.net). of Take care, enjoy, and I'll see you in ROMulan space.

TUBULAR MABBLE (M tMwl W ftolF ’A J- vy tz i wy cyu Chrome Serif COLUMN a r r CAST CHISEL When we speak about the Amiga in respectful and reverent tones, we refer to the two components that have contributed to its use. The first is the Amiga itself, and its capability to do things like real multi-tasking and full screen video animation. These are attributes based upon the hardware components that interconnect to form the internal guts of the machine itself.
The second category referenced when we honor the noble Amiga is software. Without great software, hardware stands alone and unused. The Amiga's hardware has been supported over the years by the most innovative and creative developers in the world, and they include every possible category of interest. Dominating the field of software development for the Amiga, as most of us realize, are developers devoted to videographics and animation, the Amiga's primary stronghold.
Though many of the original Amiga developers of graphics and animation software have for the moment moved on to other platforms, their names are recorded forever in the Amiga hall of records: Aegis, Electronic Arts, ADSPEC, Seven Seas, Broderbund, Digital Creations, and more. Others remain, developers like Nova Design, NewTek, Almathera, Radiosity, MetroGrafx, MegageM, and Kara, to name a few. Kara Computer Graphics is one of the most definitive supporters of the Amiga, definitive because the Kara Fonts Collection has long defined the groundbreaking graphics of the Amiga.
Fonts?
At first glance, you might say "why all this fuss about a font collection"? The moment you crack the package however, and look at exactly what is involved on your monitor, you will understand why Kara Software's font volumes have played such an important part in the Amiga's history and continued use. Kara fonts are the highest quality color fonts on the market, and still maintain that position today after all the years since their inception. As a person who works on a Mac and a Pentium as well as on Figure 1 (left). The Kara Fonts collection is an Amiga original, and consists of a number of
high quality color fonts.
WOOD Kara fonts were made for video display, yet they work equally as well when targeted towards desktop publishing.
My Amigas, I can assure you that there is absolutely nothing like Kara fonts on the Mac, on the PC, or on any of the myriads of bloated CD-ROMs loaded with hundreds of font styles for any platform.
Kara fonts were made for video display, yet they work equally as well when targeted towards desktop publishing.
The Amiga was the first platform capable of displaying color fonts, and the high quality designs of Kara fonts pushed that capacity to the max. The Kara CD-ROM The brand new Kara CD-ROM contains all of the fonts in the Kara collection that have been released piecemeal on floppies over the years, and it will be a valued and welcome member of your CD graphics library. But even more content is included to make up the 650 MB of material on this CD.
Here's what's included: 1, Eleven exquisite tutorial animations that step you through ail of the CD content, from fonts to AnimFonts to StarFields to PersonalPaint effects.
Yes, a copy of Cloanto's PersonalPaint is included on the CD. The animations can be played one at a time, or sequenced through in a global showing. The animations can be viewed in 16,32, and 256 colors for both NTSC and PAL systems.
2. Kara's ColorFonts for both standard systems and for the
Broadcast Titler software. The fonts include: Bevel, Brick,
Bullion, Capsule, Cast, Chisel, ChiselScript, ChiselSerif,
Chrome, ChromeChiselScript, ChromeScript, ChromeSerif, Column,

As another extra added feature, Cloanto’s personal Font Maker is included on the Kara CD-ROM GoldExtrude (my favorite), Granite, GraniteChisel, KaraBrushed, ChiselScriptKoman, GothicChisel, GothicSerif, RomanExtrude, Tubular, Marble, MarbleBevel, and Wood. These come in various sizes.
3. PlaqueGrounds. These are rendered plaques that act as a
perfect backdrop for any of the Kara Fonts on the CD, and are
included in NTSC and PAL variations in both Style and material
libraries. They come as JPEG'd IFF 24-bit, full IFF 24-bit, 16
and 256 colors, and as Stencils.
4. Cloanto's ColorType. This is a little gem of a program that
allows you to create your own color fonts, from scratch or
from a font in your Amiga library. Instructions for its use
are contained on the CD.
5. PersonalPaint. This is version 6.4 of this well known Amiga
paint program, with all features and tools in tact.
6. Utilities. This is a set of utilities to help you install the
fonts and view them,
7. AnimFonts. This is a drawer full of Kara's exclusive
AnimFonts, AnimBrushes that allow you to craft interesting
font animation with a selection of Kara Fonts. There are five
complete AnimBrush alphabets, including: Bullion, Capsule,
KaraGothicChisel, ChromeChiselScript, and ChromeScript.
8. StarFields are three complete NTSC PAL animations (in both 2
and 16 color) that can be used as backdrops for Kara Fonts,
AnimFonts, or your own animated figures. Also included are a

9. PFM PDM. Cloanto's Personal Fonts maker and Printer Driver
Modifier utilities. Personal Fonts Maker is an application
that focuses upon the creation of Amiga bitmap fonts. Printer
Driver Modifier allows you to load and edit your Amiga printer
driver, and it should be used with care.
10. Kara's CD Guide is an AmigaGuide document that takes you
through all of the needed information for each of the
programs on the CD. It requires Amiga DOS 3.0 or above.

A few of the many options in Air Mail 4.0 Figure 2 (bottom). Air Mail’s In Box, and Address Book.
Air Mail From Danny Y. Wong and Toysoft Development, Inc., Air Mail is currently at version 4.0, and is chock-full of features and capabilities. A few of these include automatic handling of messages including Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) and uuencoded files. You can also set up Air Mail to play IFF sound files for various events, such as having new mail (Figure 1).
When started, Air Mail displays a small menu bar on your screen. All of its functions can be selected either from this group of icons, or from menus.
Opening the In or Out box will display a listing of the mail files available (Figure 2). Double clicking on a file name will display the message for reading. Choosing to reply to a message will start either the internal editor or your favorite external editor as set in Air Mail's preferences.
Outgoing messages can be stored in a Queue folder until you are on line and want to send them.
One unique feature is called True Signatures. This allows you to use a paint program to draw an image you wish to attach to your e-mail. Other Air Mail users running under OS3.1 will be able to display your image at the end of your message. Of course Air Mail will handle the more usual ASCII signatures, and can even add a random tag to your message. Tags are one line in length, and if you create a file of thoughts, quotes or sentiments, Air Mail will add one to the end of your signature.
Addressing a message to someone in your Address book involves simply dragging their name from one Listview gadget to another (Figure 3).
This same window handles your selection of files to attach to your e- mail.

You can also set up User Mailboxes into which Air Mail will automatically place messages from the specified users. This is handy if you have ongoing e-mail correspondence with certain people, allowing you to keep these messages separate from all others.
Air Mail is a commercial program as of version 4.0 with a price of $ 40US.
Documentation is in AmigaGuide format, and an Arexx installation script is included. A demo version is available from AmiNet in the comm mail subdirectory, and the Toysoft homepage (Figure 4) at: http: www.spots.ab.ca -toysoft Air Mail requires OS 2.1+, either AmiTCP IP 4.0+, Miami, TermiteTCP, or Mlink, and Magic User Interface

Bomb!
Luca De Santis began his Best Offline Message Browser (Figure 5) with the single purpose of having an offline reader for use on his favorite BBS. During the programming, he decided to employ a system of import export filters. This has allowed him to add features that make it possible to use Bomb! As an internet mail reader.
This same system of filters will allow the planned addition of Usenet Newsgroup capabilities in the future.

Message sources are organized under the heading BBS's, each with its own configuration (Figure 6), message bases, etc. The main window (Figure 7) displays the current message, and gives access to the different BBSs and various Areas within each BBS (Figure
8) . Messages can be read either sequentially or by following
subject threads. On Line help is available, as well as the MUI
bubble help.
Workbench Screen _IMU£ As each message is imported, it can be automatically unarchived, decoded if it was uuencoded, or decrypted if the sender used PGP.
Obviously you have to install the appropriate archiving, coding or encryption programs for these features to work (Figure 9). For more complete details on Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), see the article by Dr. Michael Tobin in the January issue of Amazing Computing. These features are also available when sending messages (Figure 10).
Bomb! Is shareware, with a requested payment of $ 18US. Requirements are OS 2.0+, MUI3.3+, and a TCP IP stack, such as Miami, or AmiTCP IP. AmigaGuide documentation and an Installer script round out the package. Audio Thunder AsimWare Innovations makes it possible to translate audio files to and from other formats, hi R. S.’rrtJ.' rf .-' Mi’r, We often forget that the Amiga is a great platform for creating and manipulating audio as well as video.
But it remains true, and over the years, a number of developers have produced both hardware and software to allow professional musicians and hobbyists alike to write and record music, manipulate sound samples, and tinker with the sound spectrum of the human voice, all on our beloved wonder machine.
But the world hasn't remained where it was when the Amiga was first introduced. Now, software and hardware that represents the peak of audio capabilities runs on Windows machines, and the trend keeps forging ahead in that direction. The Mac has always been a leader in audio, and it too remains entrenched in recording studios throughout the world as a compositional and A&R tool. So what about the Amiga composer and audio enthusiast? Is there no way for her or him to tap into the audio file formats reserved for non-Amiga platforms?
Someone has ridden to the rescue.
AsimWare as the Voice in the Wilderness What is needed for the Amiga audio enthusiast to be current these days is a way to speak with (handshake) the non-Amiga dominant audio file formats, and to be able to convert them to Amiga intelligible structures.
After all, we have Nova Design's ImageFX as a translator for all types of graphical data files, PixelPro from Axiom as a conversion utility for 3D object formats, and MainActor Professional for translating non-Amiga movie and animation file formats back and forth. Now AsimWare Innovations, long known for its CD-ROM utilities in the Amiga realm, takes the high ground as the software of choice when it is necessary to translate audio files to and from other formats: Audio Thunder.
The core purpose that motivated AsimWare to develop Audio Thunder was fairly specific. It has to do with NewTek, the company that has sustained the Amiga for many years as the receptor for the Video Toaster, and also as the creator of the Video Flyer.
The Video Flyer, a non-Amiga add-on system from NewTek, is used to speed up the generation of NewTek LightWave animation frames, and to act as a general production tool for Toaster LightWave users. The Flyer handles audio clips as well, so they can be integrated into a total production.
But there's a problem.
The Flyer's audio clip files are proprietary, and have no way (on their own) to talk to or understand other audio file formats, Amiga or not. To get sound into a Flyer production, it has to be audio digitized directly. That is less than perfect, because while it reigns supreme as a video enhancement device, the Flyer is not the best solution for professional audio. Users need to utilize other options such as on the Amiga side with the Sunrize Industry boards and the Toccata, as well as on the non-Amiga side with a host of audio formats even further from what the Flyer can digest.
Audio Thunder, therefore, has the potential of serving two Amiga communities: Amiga users who are Flyer equipped, and the wider community of audiophiles who are more in need of a general audio file conversion system. I am not a Flyernaut, so the main thrust of this article is targeted more towards the general Amiga population, those of us that appreciate having audio file conversion at our disposal.
Flyer Folks Audio Thunder can read and write the Flyer Audio Clip formatted files. Audio Thunder also features a list of options not resident within the Flyer, but that Flyer audio users are much in need of from time to time.
These include: full audio playback capabilities, resampling of audio segments, basic audio editing (though the Flyer offers a little too), mono to stereo fusion, multiple Clip Time sequencing, and incorporating fades.
Audio Thunder can be launched directly from the Flyer environment. A library of Flyer Clips, produced by Sound Ideas, is included on the AsimWare CD-ROM.
Supported Audio Formats Both Flyer users and the general population of Amiga audio buffs will want to know what audio files Audio Thunder can read and write. This list includes Flyer Audio Clips, CDDA (standard CD-ROM audio), Studio 16 (files written by Sunrize Industries AD-516 audio digitizer), MAUD (from MacroSystem's Toccata board), AIFF (common cross-platform audio format), WAV (standard PC 16 bit audio file format), and 8SVX (Amiga 8 bit samples).
It's apparent that Studio 16 and Toccata owners will want to add Audio Thunder to their list of software purchases, giving them a broader range of recording and editing options.
Just as a size comparison, a 4MB Flyer Clip file converted to a WAV file takes about 2 3 as much hard drive space, and when converted to an 8SVX file takes about half as much space.
My Uses of Audio Thunder Several years ago, I spent about six months creating my own library of Amiga 8SVX 8 bit audio samples, the final number of which reached about 1500 samples. I devoted an entire hard drive to storing them. Some time after that, I got a Toccata board, which plays 16 bit samples.
I have always wanted to convert a selection of the 8SVX files to the Toccata's 16 bit format for playback and editing. You can do this on the Toccata itself, but since I also work on other platforms, I have since had the desire to translate some of the samples to WAV format as well. This is something the Toccata does not offer.
With AsimWare's Audio Thunder software, both were made possible. I am now on a mission to translate about seventy of the 8SVX files, and I have flawlessly converted about forty of them with Audio Thunder.
Conclusion If you are familiar with AsimWare's range of products for the Amiga, you know that they get revised rather regularly. I am sure that this will also hold true for Audio Thunder, since this is only version 1.0. One area that I think could use some upgrading is to make the editing module a little more extensive, perhaps adding a range of effects and other features.
All in all, Audio Thunder is another example of a definitive Amiga centered product that leads in its field.
Consider it a positive investment if part of your Amiga work revolves around manipulating and incorporating audio.
Consider it a necessary investment if you are a Flyer owner.
Audio Thunder System Requirements Required: Amiga computer with AmigaDOS version 2+, hard Drive, 4 Megs of RAM, a CD- ROM drive.
Recommended: Amiga 3000 4000 4000T, CPU acceleration, NewTek Flyer, CDDA compliant CD-ROM drive, SCSI controller, 6MB RAM, professional audio card, AsimCDFS version 3.+ (higher versions work better).

Tech (408) 626-2633 Fax (408)625-6588 BBS (408)625-6580 Installing the AmiFAST 3000 Improve your Amiga 3000’s capacity with standard 72-pin SIMMs.
Although the Amiga is not the memory hog that other computer platforms have come to be, it still can benefit from expansion. The Amiga 3000's main expansion port is through the ZIP area. Unfortunately, ZIP memory is not the industry standard (created by those same memory hogs) and so it is not always plentiful or inexpensive. ProvTech, from Washington, ProvTech makes the AmiFast 3000 in different configurations. The board at the top will use double sided 16-chip SIMMs while the board on the bottom will only work with 8-chip single-sided SIMMs.
Indiana, has created an expansion board that solves these problems and allows Amiga 3000 owners to expand their machines with 8-chip 4MB or 16-chip 8MB SIMMs available anywhere from STAPLES to CompUSA (or your favorite Amiga Dealer of course).
While ProvTech sells the AmiFAST for $ 89 direct and most stores sell the 16-chip 8MB boards for $ 49 or less, this means that you can expand the Amiga 3000 to 16MB (using two SIMM boards) for under $ 200.
The only problem is AmiFAST 3000 requires 8 chips per side. You must physically look at the boards to be sure they are the correct configuration for this assembly. ProvTech officials have told Amazing Computing that they believe the problem is in the way the memory chips are refreshed. They have not yet discovered a way around the problem.
Our installation began by attempting to secure the correctly configured devices. Unfortunately, we spent a long time on hold while companies very politely told us that they did not know what we wanted. Undaunted, we contacted the technical hotline of one of the largest retail suppliers of memory SIMMs, PNY.
After a long time on hold (PNY maintains a 24-hour technical hotline that must be called at least once by everyone who owns a computer) a very polite technician reviewed what we needed and then asked what stores we had in the area. PNY issues different serial numbers for their devices to different chains. The 8MB board I needed could be purchased at STAPLES with part number 32271. Warning: part number 32271 covers several configurations of the 8MB board.
Fortunately, PNY memory boards are in boxes with a display window. It was possible to call my local store and ask someone to look in the window and tell me if the chips were the correct count.
The AmiFast connects through the ZIP memory expansion area (top-lower right portion). All of your ZIPs must be removed to make room for the expansion board.
Connecting the AmiFAST board correctly to the ZIP area is difficult, but not impossible. Care is the watch word whenever you have your Amiga open. The SIMM banks are shown below both empty and full. The AmiFAST board rests under your Amiga 3000 power supply and very close to the sytem (an. Be extremely careful that you have fully inserted the device although not too hard!
Cautions Honestly, procuring the chips was more difficult and took more time than the installation. While this is not a project for a first-time novice. The instructions are very straightforward and the installation proceeded smoothly.
Two cautions must be made here. First, this type of work is always performed at your own risk. If you are unsure of what to do or you have reservations about doing the work don't.
These days there are plenty of service centers who will perform this task for you. Yes, it will cost some money, but you do get some piece of mind.
Second, your Amiga (or any computer) is a robust, hardworking machine when it wears its cover. Once you take the cover away, you have exposed the Amiga's internal circuits to the outside world. Be careful to keep the computer disconnected from peripherals and power. Also make certain that you are grounded. Any static electricity no matter how small that you conduct to the components of your computer could cause immeasurable damage.
Installation In order to install the AmiFAST board, you must remove the hard drive, power supply, and 3000 expansion board. The AmiFAST connects to the ZIP expansion bank in the right front area of the motherboard. In order to install the board, you must first remove the ZIPs. These ZIPs can be saved for another 3000, sold to a memory buyer, or held onto as a memento.
The trickiest part of the installation is positioning the pins on the underside of the board to the correct spots in the ZIP expansion area. This takes some time, patience, and a second set of eyes from a friend or spouse will help. Once you are certain the pins are positioned carefully per the instructions carefully push the board into the socket. Once the board is correctly seated, you can install the SIMMs in the special profiled sockets and reassemble your Amiga.
Conclusions When you first look at this device, you wonder if it could be that simple. Yes, it can be. It is great to have an Amiga 3000 running 16MB (the max allowed). It is even better to know you did it yourself without losing your shirt in the process.

Available RAM to the MAX Do you have an old A500 or even an
Amiga 1000 with little memory ? Perhaps you can still get some
useful work out of them with these special memory saving
techniques.
If you have an older Amiga with 512K or 1MB of memory, you probably aren't doing much with it.
But what if you knew how to recover up to 300K of usable RAM?
The old workhorse might just have some energy left in it after all.
Even an unaccelerated 7 Mhz 68000 is still useful, as long as it has enough memory free to run software. These tricks range from subtle to obvious, but none are too difficult for the typical Amiga user to carry out.
Trim the Workbench The first trick to saving memory lies in your Workbench screen. An overscanned high-color screen requires more memory (not to mention CPU cycles) than a 2-color 640x200 or 640x400 screen. The bigger screen is nice if you have a display enhancer, but such devices are rare in low-memory Amigas. The lack of color is reminiscent of first-generation Macs, but when memory is tight, it's better served elsewhere. The performance increase received by going to a two- color workbench is also noticeable.
Prior to version 2, Workbench did not have provisions for a two-color screen, but older PD programs such as "Add21K" and "IBitplane," which you can insert in Startup-Sequence, perform that task.
Memory Saving Startup The real key to saving buckets of memory, however, lies in the modification of Startup-Sequence.
Commodore frowned upon this By Dave Farquhar practice, recommending changes to User-Startup instead, but the practice is safe as long as you save your original startup-sequence and user- startup files so you can revert back to them in case of problems. Also, don't modify your original Workbench disks only perform this surgery on copies.
Table 1 presents a modified Startup-Sequence for Workbench 2.x. If you have your own commands in User-Startup, add them just before the LoadWB command, as this version omits User-Startup to increase speed.
Workbench 1.x users can refer to Table 2 for a modified Startupll.
As an added bonus, these modified startup files will help your system boot faster. They do a number of things to save memory. Unlike most operating systems, the Amiga OS relies heavily on a RAM disk. This speeds operations considerably, but it is hardly worth the price of available memory for rarely-performed tasks.
Workbench 2.x, for instance, puts the preferences in RAM: by default. Since most people rarely, if ever, change these settings, it is hardly worth spending up to 100K of precious memory. These revised files put the clipboard and temporary files in RAM: because running them from floppy could slow system performance.
If you have a hard drive, however, you would probably like to create directories called T and Clips, and point the assignments there. The performance hit is slight, and in the unlikely event of your system crashing or losing power, you may be able to recover some of your work from the files in those directories. Using these settings, my RAM disk only uses IK of available memory.
Workbench 2.x owners can recover more memory by moving any unneeded DOSDrivers, Monitors, and Commodities from their respective drawers into the Storage drawer. If you don't have a multifrequency monitor, or only use NTSC video modes, loading the PAL, Multiscan, and Eurodrivers wastes memory.
Errant Software Even after all of this scrimping, some software may still refuse to run. Workbench 2.x users can recover another 100K or so of memory by running Workbench 1.3. It does run under the 2.x ROMs, and many of the features of the newer versions, such as the enhanced Workbench menus, are retained. Commodore's manuals do not recommend this practice, but all well-behaved software (including, presumably, Workbench 1.3) is supposed to work correctly with the newer ROMs. If risking a slightly higher amount of system stability allows you to run a program you couldn't previously, the risk
is probably worth it.
If you are really strapped for memory, there is always the old trick from 1985 when the standard Amiga 1000 had 256K of memory: Don't use the Workbench. While nowhere near as memory-hungry as the GUIs for other systems, Workbench does consume about 200K of RAM. If you just can't spare 20 percent of your system's available memory, make a special boot disk that lacks the LoadWB command, or, if you can spare 40K of RAM, replaces LoadWB with NewShell the Shell is, after all, more polished than the CLI. To preserve your Amiga's multitasking ability while in a command-line environment, precede your
commands with the Run command to detach them from your shell.
More Juice than Other Systems A one-megabyte Amiga, it turns out, is much more powerful and useful than a Mac or PC with a comparable amount of RAM. I wouldn't want to put a one-megabyte unaccelerated Amiga 500 to work as a rendering station or do heavy desktop publishing on it, but considering that Microsoft's Windows 95 and IBM's OS 2 won't even boot with just a megabyte of RAM, it's a pretty amazing trick to get a usable GUI running with such limited computing resources. Being able to run wordprocessing or spreadsheet software on top of that makes it even better.

199. 00 - This Old Workbench: Episode 6 Progress is our Most
Important Product Mr. Matthews offers a variety of utilities
to brighten up your Amiga or ease your task. This month’s
assortment includes a program to liven up your bland Amiga
boot sequence, a utility to display icons for files with no
icons, Pop up 3D style menus, solutions to mode promotion,
and more.
By Dave Matthews I have a lot of stuff to cover, so let's get to it. As usual, the Amiga programmers out there keep cranking out new code. I'm going to look at some major new versions of popular programs.
Syspic40.lha Grzegorz Calkowski Shareware Syspic is a program that can liven up your bland Amiga boot sequence. Syspic can display IFF pictures, play sound samples and music mods, and can also display information about your Amiga, such as OS version, processor, time and date, etc. Syspic has a very nice random file selection feature, so you can display a different picture with every boot. You can also tell Syspic which screen mode to open on, very nice for SVGA or Multisync monitors. See Figure 1 for a screen shot of Syspic at work.
Newicons3.lha (main) Newlcons31.lha (update) Philip A. Vedovatti Eric Sauvageau Freeware Newlcons, originally by Nicola Salmoria, has been taken over by Eric Sauvageau and Phil Vedovatti.
Version 3, which is now a commodity, has some nifty features, including the ability to turn off the borders on icons, as well as make transparent areas in icons. A new preference program is also included. Some other new features include support for graphic boards. The new update includes Deflcons with an expanded bra infile.
Deflcons displays an icon based on the file type, for files with no icons. The new brainfile includes new file types like PNG and LZX. If you like the original icons that come with New Icons, be sure and check out Phil Vedovatti's Aesicons, a New Icons package, now up to release 9, Phil has created a ton of new icons to show off New Icons. Check out Figure 2 for a screenshot of my Workbench, using Newlcons v3.
MagicMenu2_15.lha Martin Korndorfer Olaf Barthel Mario 'padrino' Cattaneo Shareware Magic Menu is one of the all time classic Amiga upgrades. This utility enhances the Amiga's menu system with Pop up, 3D style menus. Originally coded by Martin Korndorfer development is being continued by Olaf Barthel, with artwork by Mario Cattaneo. Version 2.15 features a more modern look, with graphic representation of keyboard shortcuts, checkmarks, separator bars, and drop shadows. See Figure 2 for a shot of Magic Menu.
PictureMenu20.lha Pawel Pijanowski Cardware Picture Menu, by Pawel Pijanowski is another program to spruce up your Workbench menus. Version 2, features redone graphics, included animated menu graphics. If you happen to own a color font editor, such as Cloanto's Professional Font Maker, you can create your own images for Picture Menu. Note that Picture Menu does not work with Tools Daemon, which adds new menus to the Workbench menustrip, or Rekeyit, which lets you define your own keyboard shortcuts. Picture Menu does work with earlier versions of Magic Menu (such as 1.29), but may interfere
with the new 2.15 version. See Figure 3 for an example of Picture Menu.

PictDT43.lha Ralph Schmidt
F. Mariak Matthias Scheler Freely Distributable In a previous
episode of Amazing Computing, I covered a new picture
datatype with support for 24 bit images. This new picture
datatype, now at release 43.757 is still in its beta testing
stage, but the author has eliminated the "expiration date"
code. In earlier releases, this would cause the datatypes to
quit working on a certain date, which caused a lot of
confusion for people.
On the other hand, the author has dropped support for AGA, concentrating on Cybergrafx support. The datatype still works on an AGA machine, if you have the ModePro Preference*: Hot Key - tlcommond p _

AkJFIF43x.lha akPNG43x.lha akGIF43x.lha Andreas Ralph Kleinert Shareware In other datatype news, Andreas Ralph Kleinert has released new datatypes for PNG, GIF and JPEG images, which support 24 bit picture datatype. The PNG and JPEG datatype have several options for displaying hi-color images, including HAM, and dithering.
I have found that the mode promotion facilities of WB 3.0 leave something to be desired.
Particularly with a monitor that cannot display the NTSC or PAL 15 Khz modes, some way of enforcing particular screen modes for programs is sorely needed.
Sins of Omission Circle 105 on Reader Service card.
The following are a few goodies I either missed or was unable to try before. Up till now I have been using a venerable old CBM2002 monitor, so I haven't had much luck with mode promotion. Since I can now borrow my PC's SVGA monitor, I have found that the mode promotion facilities of WB 3.0 leave something to be desired.
Particularly with a monitor that cannot display the NTSC or PAL 15 Khz modes, some way of enforcing particular screen modes for programs is sorely needed.

CBE402.lha Anthony J Moringello Shareware The Amiga's clipboard is very handy, but unfortunately, although there are up to 256 separate clip board units, usually you only can access one, which means, you can only copy one item at a time to the clipboard, and it overwrites any previous item stored there. Clipboard Enhancer (CBE) is a very handy utility which extends the capabilities of the Amiga's clipboard.
CBE adds a history, so you can copy items, text pictures, whatever, and they won't be overwritten. It also features a browser, so you can look over the items you have stored in the clipboard. If you have OS 3.0+, you can use datatypes to read text and or view pictures right in the CBE window. See Figure 1 for the CBE Clipboard browser. (Thanks to Donald Feldbruegge for reminding me about this handy program!)
Reqtools.lha Nico Franqois Magnus Holmgren Shareware The ASL filerequester Commodore added with the 2.0+ OS was certainly an improvement over the mish mash of file requesters (when you even had a file requester!) Under earlier versions of Workbench, but it does have a few quirks.
One of my least favorite quirks is putting the directories at the bottom of the requester, after the files.
There have been a number of programs offering enhancements to the Amiga's requesters, and one of the more popular is ReqTools. The original version was by Nico Francois, a name familiar to readers of the series, and Amiga users in general. Lately the project has been taken over by Magnus Holmgren, and is now at version 2.7. ReqTools features the following requesters: a query requester, a string requester, a number requester, a file requester, a font requester, a palette requester, a volume requester and a screenmode requester. ReqTools includes RTPatch, by Dave Jones, so all your system
requesters can automatically use the new Requesters. See Figure 6 for the ReqTools prefs program, and a resultant file requester. In addition to the users package, programmers can get the developer package, and add these features easily to their own programs.
The Aniga business progran, I4B1.3 & up Stark Reality Software A R, A P, G.L. Invoices, Billing Inventory, Payroll Client List Circle 126 on Reader Service card.
TinyMeter.lha Tine Urou Giftware Tiny meter, by Tinic Urou, could be thought of as a memory meter on steroids. In addition to displaying time and date, graphical memory, storage and CPU usage, it can also launch programs.
See the right hand side of Figure 2 and 3 for different configurations of TinyMeter in action.
OutlineFont.lha Daniel Nyberg Freely Distributable If you use an image for your window or workbench backdrop, you may find your favorite font is a little hard to read. Enter Daniel Nyberg's OutlineFont. This little patch creates an outline around each character. You can use a contrasting color to make the text stand out against a busy backdrop. Again, see Figure 1 and 2 for this utility in action.
Lowfrag.lha Eric Sauvageau Freely Distributable In Episode 5 of This Old WorkBench, I mentioned I would like the New Amiga OS to avoid memory fragmentation. Well, while we all wait for the next generation of Amiga OS, here is a little utility that could help stave off memory fragmentation on your current Amiga.
Eric Sauvageau's (a familiar name!)
LowFrag helps avoid fragmentation by using the memory pool system of the Amiga, and Exec's memory allocation flag MEMF_REVERSE. Basically, little chunks of memory are allocated from one end of the memory pool, and big chunks are allocated from the other end. This prevents large areas of memory from being chopped up when little bits of memory are used.
Well, that's it for this episode. Again, please feel free to write me via Amazing or at my email address. See you next time.

VISA MC DISC AM. EXPRESS VIScorp fades as Quikpak Announces Offer for Amiga Technologies After VIScorp announced it had lost its bid position (see Amazing Computing February issue), many Amiga users were dismayed that the Amiga zuas once again thrown to the whims offate. In late December, QuikPak's C.E.O., Dave Ziembicki, published the following letter.
“QuikPak believes that there is more to the Amiga than a simple set top box. We believe that the A4000 and its successors have a place in the market. We believe that a model along the lines of the A1200 also can play an important role in the future of the Amiga.” An open letter to the Amiga Community The past few years have not been kind to the Amiga Community. Since the demise of Commodore, the ownership and future of the Amiga has been continually uncertain. The only thing that has remained constant is the loyalty of Amiga users. It is with respect to this loyalty that we feel it necessary
to let YOU know the current state of affairs and what QuikPak is doing to see that the Amiga has the successful future it so deserves.
Back when Amiga Technologies was owned by Escom, QuikPak was selected to manufacture the complete A4000T and components for the A1200. During the collapse of Escom and the subsequent negotiations with VIScorp, QuikPak continued manufacturing and servicing Amiga Computers. Throughout this time of uncertainty, QuikPak continued to support the platform, placing ads in the North American publication Amazing Computing, forging alliances with Amiga developers and supporters, and developing new products of our own.
Recently, at AmigaFest in Toronto, we unveiled two new computers and we have been shipping the '060 Accelerator for the A4000T. We believe this product development clearly demonstrates our commitment to the Amiga.
It now appears evident that negotiations between VIScorp and Amiga Technologies have reached a standstill. As a creditor of Amiga Technologies, QuikPak has a vested interest in seeing the future of the Amiga handled properly. To this end, QuikPak has placed an offer in front of the German liquidator for Amiga Technologies, and we are awaiting further information regarding this.
What does this mean to you, the end user? QuikPak believes that there is more to the Amiga than a simple set top box. We believe that the A4000 and its successors have a place in the market. We believe that a model along the lines of the A1200 also can play an important role in the future of the Amiga. We further believe that products currently under development at QuikPak can bring the Amiga back to the forefront in innovation. We believe that working closely with developers, other manufacturers, distributors, and dealers is necessary to make the Amiga a success. And, perhaps most importantly
of all, we believe in listening to you, the person who has kept this platform alive.
We hope that the new year will allow us to bring you good news, that QuikPak will be successful in our negotiations with the German liquidator. We trust that the liquidator will move quickly, and justly, to see these events through. We encourage any and all input from the Amiga Community - let us know what you want to see.
And, finally, we encourage those responsible for handling the Amiga Technologies' assets to be as open as we at QuikPak are striving to be.
Sincerely, Dave Ziembicki

Again?
Maybe not! As of press time, the bid is still in process. However, the ESCOM trustees have already spent a great deal of the creditors time and money without a resolution to this situation. According to several sources, the non-Amiga portions of the ESCOM empire have already been liquidated. The creditors will need to realize a return on the money they are owed soon before any more devaluation occurs and they will be pressing the trustees, their representatives, for action immediately.
